I have just got my full license, and my father and I have ,000 CAN to put toward a car. I would like a luxury saloon or large sedan. I have looked at the lower models of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and The Audi A4 and A6. Please recommend me a vehicle that would suit me well.
Thanks for the answers everyone, they will all be taken into great consideration,
Tristan

Well… Do you have any sort of unwarranted, yet overwhelming hatred towards American cars? I only ask because I see there’s nothing but German-made cars on your list and I know they’re are many people out there who are like that for no really good reason whatsoever.
First of all… The A6 and most especially the A4 are not large cars. Second, with only $10-grand CAN, I’m afraid your expectations are far too high when compared to the reality of the situation… With the models you’ve listed, the only examples you’re going to find will most likely have ridiculously high miles on them and that brings me to my final two points… Do you have any idea how expensive they are to not only repair, but properly maintain? Anything you might find at that price will most certainly need some amount of work done… Are you prepared to spend several thousand more dollars to get whatever work done that will almost certainly be needed? Not only that and with high mileage and negligent maintenance aside… German does not automatically equate to impeccable quality – especially with regard to Mercedes-Benz and even more so with MBs made in the past 10-15 years or so.
So back to my original question… Have you even considered buying American? If so, why not? Have you even looked for, let alone driven something made by… say… Cadillac or even Lincoln?
Frankly… You’re doing yourself a disservice if you haven’t.
One of the biggest gripes I hear from many people who bash American cars, is with regard to how much they depreciate in value. That’s a valid point, especially for a person who buys new vehicles in relatively short intervals. However… the key word there is "new." As far as used vehicles go, American cars, especially American luxury cars offer some of the best values out there on the market.
I only buy American and I only buy used. Why? Because despite what some people may say, Detroit does make good, reliable vehicles and in the case of Cadillac – with many features that rival the best from Europe. Not only that… but I tend to keep my vehicles for a while and by buying used, they offer absolutely terrific value… Only the original owner takes the hit in depreciation – their loss is most definitely my gain.
Are they more expensive to fix and maintain than say a Ford or a Pontiac… Of course they are – they’re luxury cars. But when compared to something like a MB, the costs become much more reasonable.
If you haven’t done so yet… Go out and drive something like a 2000-2003 Seville STS, a 2000-2005 Deville DTS, or a 2000-2002 Eldorado ETC (coupe). Heck, you might even be able to find a 2003-2004 CTS, although they’ll probably have a bit more miles on them than the STS/DTS.
On the Lincoln side of things… there’s always something like a 2001-2005 LS, a 1998-2002 Continental, a 1997-1998 Mark VIII LSC (coupe)… or heck, if you’re willing to give up some technological features in lieu of straight up comfort, the old Town Car still offers one hell of a posh ride.
Other very good, viable options include a 2001-2003 Oldsmobile Aurora 4.0L V8, a 2000-2005 supercharged Buick Park Avenue Ultra (extremely reliable and cheap to repair), or a 1995-1999 supercharged Buick Riviera (coupe, and again – very reliable with its 3.8L V6).
Personally, I’d put my money on a mid-2002-2003 Cadillac Seville STS. It was the first vehicle to debut GM’s Magnetic Ride Control ("Magnaride") suspension (the second vehicle being the 50th Anniversary Corvette), which even today is one of the most advanced, continuously-variable road-sensing suspensions out there. Do some research on it, it’s an amazing suspension which gives those STSs equipped with such superb handling characteristics. Not only that, but the 300HP, dual-cam Northstar V8 gives the sedan more power you’ll probably ever need.
With that said, to find one in nice condition and with low miles will probably cost a little bit more than what you’re willing/able to spend by a few thousand dollars, but deals do pop up. However, the pre-Magnaride STSs or a 2000-2002 ETCs or DTSs all still have very good handling characteristics (with hydraulic, actuating valve suspensions similar to what you’ll find on German rivals) and even better, still offer the terrific 300HP V8.
Either way and if nothing else… Just make sure you check out ALL of the offerings from all of the different manufacturers – German, British, AND American before you make any decision.
Believe me… I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised if you do.
